Great Idea

Ok, I'm going to "borrow" an idea from the Some of This and Some of That blog. Their idea is to give a child an ornament as a gift to open on Christmas Eve. That way they get to open one present, they get an ornament all their own, and they can take it with them one day when they are grown. (sniff)
What a great idea.
One tradition I started was getting our picture taken with Santa every year. I don't mean just Maddy, I mean all three of us. The picture becomes part of our Christmas card and we put out all of the pictures each year as part of our decorations. I don't have a lot of pictures with both of my parents, so I thought I would try to give Maddy at least one picture a year with both of us. We are going to look very silly when she is 18 and we are in our (cough, cough) late 40's (wink) all trying to sit on Santa's lap, but I don't care.
Share one of your Christmas Eve traditions with me!

I love your Christmas pictures. The 07 one is still on my 'fridge, just waiting for the 08. I too love the idea of giving a child an ornament each year so when they have their own tree it will be filled, not only with ornaments but precious memories. Our kids all have enough stuff, but they can never have enough memories.

This isn't only a Christmas Eve tradition but a Christmas season tradition. When our kids were young they made a Christmas count down ribbon using a wide piece of red velveteen ribbon and 25 red, green, silver Hershey's kisses. Using a royal icing cement (like for gingerbread houses), they glued the kisses on the ribbon. After the cement was allowed to dry four about 24 hours, the ribbons were hung on the wall and became part of the Christmas decor in our home. Each night (before brushing teeth) they would eat one Hershey kiss and knew how many days left until Christmas by counting the remaining kisses. On Christmas Eve there was always one kiss left at the top of the ribbon. When they got up on Christmas morning, there was no kiss, just the foil it was wrapped in. Who knew Santa loved chocolate kisses as well as cookies and milk!

Cool idea. It's so fun to be able to think about traditions for our kids. Chad and I last year started the tradition of all of us getting a new pair of pajamas as a gift we could open on Christmas Eve. We all went to bed wearing our new jammies and woke up ready to take pictures on Christmas morning. We kind of tried to match at least a little bit...I think we all had some blue in our pajamas last year.

I remember having an advent calendar every Christmas. I'm thinking of making one that we can reuse every year. I love the ribbon idea that Colleen suggested.

Here's a question: Does Santa wrap the presents that he brings to your house? When I was a kid Santa's presents were never wrapped. He usually filled our stocking and brought us one fun present that wasn't wrapped. At my friend Krystie's house, Santa wraps all of the presents from him in Santa paper. Not sure why he does it differently for different families...
