(I totally stole the pictures from Flickr, but I needed a visual for you. I am ashamed. The Library Gods may swoop down and bop me on the head.)It's no secret, I am terrible at packing lunches, or any other food-on-the-go for that matter. I blame it on my parents. When I was in elementary school I disliked my home packed lunches so much I begged my mother to let me get hot lunch, and hot lunch wasn't cool. Once, when I was in high school I needed a sack lunch for some reason and my dad made it for me. It consisted of chips, a Twinkie, a Coke, and some sort of sandwich- maybe. You can see my role
models in the food department were severely lacking. Luckily they made up for it in many other wonderful ways. So when I stumbled on the bento box idea, it struck a chord with me. Maybe, just maybe, I can dream about creating healthy, yummy lunches for Maddy and me (Marc too, on the weekends). Here are my lunch envy sites. The first one is a whole company dedicated to healthy lunches, and they sell their own cool boxes, which are also available at Whole Foods. They are called Laptop Lunches. Look at how beautiful the lunches are! I am telling you, it's lunch envy! I think there is something about how artistically the food is packed into the box and how visual it is that makes it drool worthy. I also found this great blog about lunches. She has truly taken lunch packing to a new Olympic worthy level. So cool! Sigh, I don't know if I can do it, but I will dream about it a little longer.By the way, do you see the ice cream looking treat in the middle of the picture above? It's not ice cream, it's a hard boiled egg pressed into a cool shape using a Japanese hard boiled egg press. I don't know how it's colored, but I saw the egg presses here. Get out! You can make a pressed Hello Kitty hard boiled egg. How awesome is that??

That totally makes my PB & J look pathetic. I love how much you researched this. I can't believe there are blogs about box lunches. My eyes have been opened! I'm still totally lame and bring my lunch to school (work) in a brown sack. Such a loser.
Wow! I have a friend who I think has the laptop lunches because she wanted to send healthy food in her kids' lunches. I used to like to get hot lunch at school but at the schools I work at hot lunch does not look like fun. They don't even make the food at the school any more, it comes in a little plastic tray in a bag and then they heat it up. Yuck!
I like the idea of reusable lunch stuff...but I am sooo bad at cleaning stuff out. I would have to get into a really good habit of always taking stuff out and cleaning it or I'd be in trouble.
I'm a little scared of the ice cream hard-boiled egg but I give it a 10 for creativity! :)
Have you heard of Little Skye? They are a baby/maternity store and they have the laptop lunchboxes...I think. There is one in Grayslake at Prairie Crossing and at Deer Park.
