Staying Dry at Night

This picture is not related to my post, I just think it's a cute picture.

Maddy has been day time potty trained for a while now, but she has been wearing pull-ups at night. I just haven't felt any compelling reason to get rid of them. This week she ran out of pull-ups so we decided they would not be replaced. Good-bye pull-ups! In order to do this, we also had to say good-bye to the guard rails on her bed that keep her from rolling off. The guard rails really get in the way of a quick sheet change. Plus, we rearranged our multi-gated hallway (it's like a hamster trail for people) so she could have access to the bathroom.

The only problem we seem to be having is that Maddy sleeps so hard she has an accident and doesn't wake up. We are running about 50/50 dry and wet nights. When she is wet we don't find out until she wakes up in the morning. I guess that is not so bad, I am not the one sleeping in a wet bed. It's a lot of extra laundry, but I have two mattress pads going. That was good advice I got from the potty training book, two mattress pads and two sheets at once, rip the wet set off and you're good to go.

We also had one roll-out-of-bed incident, but she slept through the whole thing. Marc heard a thunk, checked her room and couldn't see her. He found her between the rocking chair and the bed. He picked her up and placed her back in bed without her even noticing.

Our little girl is growing up! A big girl bed without rails, no pull-ups, she rocks!!

Ok, now a funny story.

I think this week the nighttime changes for Maddy must have been weighing on my mind. I fell asleep late one night and about an hour later jumped, and I mean jumped out of bed, shouting, "Where is Maddy?!!!" Poor Marc, he was startled out of a deep sleep to me screaming about Maddy and he totally freaked out. He was sleep annoyed (like sleep walking, only sleep annoyed) with me and shouted "WHAT KATHY, WHAT!", and he never does that. It took me about a minute to realize I had been dreaming and Maddy was sound asleep in her bed, where we put her 4 hours ago. I had to get a grip on myself and try to go back to sleep. My heart was racing so fast I was breathing hard. Luckily, Marc fell asleep right away and slept soundly the rest of the night. It took me a long time to fall asleep and I slept fitfully all night. I can laugh about it now, but man, those sleep/wake mixups can seem so real!

When I look back on it I think I must have imagined we fell asleep before putting her into her bed and I was worried she was wandering around the house by herself. I used to get out of bed at night, it freaked out my parents so much they made me wear footy pajamas so they could hear my scritch-scratching feet on the floor and get me back into bed. My parents are somewhere laughing at me, it's my turn.

Great sleep talking story! Chad does that (a lot), but I'm guilty, too. Last week, Jordan woke up in the morning screaming, "No, Abbi! Stop, Abbi!" He mumbled something about a dinosaur. I think he was dreaming that Abbi from the babysitter was taking a toy away from him. Poor kiddo. We were hoping he wouldn't inherit out crazy sleeping talking/walking habits, but it seems like maybe he has!

Two nights in a row now... Today was a little bit of a bummer though, when she got up at 5:50 am to use the potty, then decided to stay up...

Time for bed. Gnight.
